On the Monday morning of our family holiday in Exmoor we headed off on a walk through The Valley of the Rocks. The Valley of the Rocks is a dry valley with stunning rock formations along the Devon coastline. It was one of the most touristy places we visited on our holiday as it's a very popular walk, and for good reason. The route we took was fairly easy-going and didn't take too long to walk but still boasted amazing views over the sea. It's such a stunning area that many writers, poets and musicians have taken inspiration from it. The valley has featured in the works of William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and R. D. Blackmore. The poet Robert Southey described the valley as:
"the very bones and skeletons of the earth; rock reeling upon rock, stone piled upon stone, a huge terrific mass"
It was a really crazy day weather wise, one minute it was bright sunshine, the next the sky was black and it was blowing a gale, and then suddenly it was sunny again! The dramatic changes of the weather didn't take away from the beautiful walk though. Our route took us down from our car park into the gorgeous town of Lynton. We passed cute little houses, a gorgeous church and the jaw-dropping Cliff Railway!
The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is a water-powered railway which joins the two twin towns together. It opened on Easter Monday in 1890 and is still an amazing sight to watch to this day.
Once we got onto the coastal path we spotted these cute little guys! The goats were everywhere, clambering up the steepest ridges and balancing on the most precarious spots...
And the views of the cliffs and rock formations were stunning, these pictures just don't do it justice!
